Commentary
And when he shook towards His piety at one time with fear and at another with modesty, to emphasize it. He explained that with what he has a branch [of warning]. And man, due to his forgetfulness, is more in need of warning. He said, confirming his branch and clarifying that the second piety is for self-accountability in purifying the deed: "And do not be" O you who are in need of warning, and they are those who have believed, "like those who forgot Allah" [meaning] turned away from His commands and prohibitions and left them like those who forget, despite what He has of attributes of majesty and honor, for which the devil has misled them from His command until he distanced them greatly from the flourishing. "So He made them forget" meaning it resulted in them forgetting themselves due to His encompassing knowledge of the apparent and the hidden. "Themselves" so they did not present for it what would benefit it, and if they presented something, it was mixed with corruptions of showing off and arrogance. Thus, they were among what He said about them. Glorified and exalted is He: "Faces on that Day humbled" [Al-Ghashiyah: 2] "Laboring, weary" [Al-Ghashiyah: 3] "They will burn in a blazing fire" [Al-Ghashiyah: 4] "They will be given to drink from a boiling spring" [Al-Ghashiyah: 5] because they did not leave any door of immorality, for the head of immorality is ignorance of Allah, and the head of knowledge and the key to wisdom is the knowledge of the self. The most knowledgeable of people about himself is the most knowledgeable of them about his Lord. "Whoever knows himself has certainly known his Lord."
And when the fruit of that was that they wasted it - meaning piety - and thus perished, he said: "Those are" meaning far from all good, "they are" specifically without others, "the wicked" meaning deeply entrenched in the breach of the circle of religion.
