Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, conveyed in this surah admonitions in words and actions, and the mentioned rhythms therein were caused by the betrayals of those who had a covenant and broke it, or by those who had shown faith and whose actions revealed their falsehood, He, glorified and exalted is He, said as a result of that, an admonition for the believers. This is because admonition after calamities is more impactful on the soul and greater in softening the heart and warning it of what necessitates punishment: ﴿O you who have believed﴾ calling them with a call of distance, expressing with the lowest ranks of faith, because it follows the mention of one who only affirmed with his tongue. ﴿Fear Allah﴾ meaning make for yourselves a protection that shields you from the wrath of the greatest King, with whom no one has authority, and it must be that He will present His servants. So beware of His punishment due to shortcomings in what He has commanded you or prohibited you. ﴿And let every soul look﴾ meaning every soul should look to its own self and desire to excel over its peers. Perhaps He unified it for the indication while also conveying the generality regarding the scarcity of those who truly comply with this matter. ﴿What it has sent forth﴾ meaning from the provisions that would lead to the rectification of the abode, for whoever does not strive to rectify it will not have comfort. Will the King be pleased with what it has sent forth so that He saves it, or will He be angered and thus ruin it?
And when the appointed time is ambiguous, the meeting with Allah is expected every day, rather every moment for the wise, due to its possibility, while it is absolutely certain that no one is unaware of it. He said, indicating with its indefinite form and ambiguity to its severity and greatness: ﴿For tomorrow﴾ meaning for the purpose of presentation after death or on the Day of Resurrection, which is extremely near, for this entire world is but one day in which some people come and others go. Death or the Hereafter is its tomorrow; there must be both of them. And everything that must happen is extremely near, especially if it remains unending. And whoever considers his tomorrow will better take care of his today, and its indefiniteness is for the purpose of magnification from countless angles.
And when He commanded to have fear of Him, glorified and exalted is He, out of fear of His might, He commanded to have fear of Him for the sake of being conscious of Him, out of shyness from His majesty and awe. This is to emphasize the command, for the essence of salvation is in piety. The plots of Satan are subtle, so whoever does not strive in holding himself accountable and examining what could be a flaw in his actions is close to having his deeds nullified by [Satan]. So He, the Most High, said: ﴿And fear Allah﴾, meaning the One who encompasses all attributes of perfection. That is, fear Him out of shyness from Him. The first type of piety is for the establishment of the forms of deeds, and this one is for their purification and the sanctification of the souls. For this reason, He explained by saying (p-459), encouraging and warning: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾, meaning the One who has the most beautiful names and the highest attributes, ﴿is All-Aware﴾, meaning He has great knowledge of your outward and inward states and encompasses ﴿what you do﴾. So you do not perform any action except that it is within His sight and hearing, so be shy before Him. And He repeated the greatest name, disliking for it to be thought that the piety is restricted to certain aspects, magnifying this status, informing that His affairs are not limited and that His encompassing knowledge does not pertain to one status over another or one matter other than another.
