Commentary
And when it was said that their abandonment of supporting Him is due to fear of Allah or something else that is appropriate for its occurrence, he explained what negates that and shows that their focus is on the tangible, like animals. He said, emphasizing this, because the people of hypocrisy deny that, as do those whose condition is similar to theirs: "Indeed, you believers are more fearful" meaning in terms of fear, which is a distinction transformed from the subject, meaning your fear that exists in them is greater and more intense "in their hearts" meaning the Jews and those who support them, from what has poured into their hearts. "From Allah" meaning from their fear of Him that they show to you, even if they mention Him with all His attributes, their fear of you is a reason for their showing that they fear Allah in hypocrisy before you.
And when this is something that the believer finds astonishing, he explained it by saying: "That" meaning the strange matter, which is their established and necessary fear of a created being like themselves, weak, who adorns it for them, and their lack of fear of the Creator, given His greatness in His essence and His being independent of them. "Because they are a people" meaning regarding what they have of strength "who do not understand" meaning they do not have renewed understanding due to their disbelief and reliance on their cunning at certain times. They do not have an understanding that opens their hearts to realize that Allah is the one who should be feared, not anyone else. Rather, they are like animals, having no regard for the unseen; they are only concerned with the tangible. And understanding is the knowledge of the meaning of words, both their apparent clarity and their hidden obscurity, with quick perception and quality of intellect.
