12If they are expelled, they will not go out with them, and if they are fought against, they will not help them. And even if they help them, they will surely turn their backs, then they will not be helped.

Commentary

And when the lying in their saying is that it is a report of what [does not] exist, He explained it by saying, confirming with a greater confirmation than their confirmation: "If they are expelled," meaning the Banu al-Nadir, "they will not go out," meaning the hypocrites, "with them," meaning out of partisanship [for them] for reasons known to Allah. "And if they are fought," meaning the Jews, from any fighter, how about the bravest of creation and the most knowledgeable of them, blessings and peace be upon him? "They will not support them," meaning the hypocrites. And indeed, Allah has spoken the truth, and they have lied in both matters: fighting and expulsion. They neither supported them nor went out with them. This was among the signs of prophethood, and it was known by those who were doubtful, let alone the certain ones. The truth of the words regarding what did not exist and would not exist, if it were to be, how would it be in the truth of the words regarding what did not exist? And how would it be if it were in His saying, the Exalted: "And if they support them," meaning the hypocrites, at a time among the times, "they will surely turn their backs," meaning the hypocrites and those who support them. And He belittled them by saying: "the backs." And when it was the habit of the Arabs to charge after retreating, He clarified that they will have no charge after this retreat, even if the time is long. He said: "Then they will not be supported," meaning there will be no renewed support for either of the two groups or for any one of them at any time. And indeed, He has spoken the truth, glorified is He: the hypocrites and the Jews have always been in humiliation and will continue to be.
