And when it indicated that this praise is for the truthful in faith by establishing the Sunnah through migration, preference, and striving in supplication for those who have shown their faith, it made the path to safety easy. This brought forth the hypocrites and made it clear that they do not act in this way because they have no firmness in the faith that leads to that. It indicated their hypocrisy, which necessitates their lying, by His saying, completing the story, addressing the highest of creation, indicating that no one other than him ﷺ can truly perceive their hypocrisy due to their intricate deceit. He was astonished by their state of not being firm despite what they see of miracles and clear signs, and they see the state of the believers, with the mercy being bestowed upon them through the facilitation of affairs and victory over the tyrants, and their turning away from this world while turning towards the Hereafter and striving in the religion, which alone calls to faith, softens hearts, and clarifies the truths to the utmost clarity: "Did you not see" meaning know with a certainty as if it were witnessed, O highest of creation. And He clarified their distance from His exalted presence and His noble, esteemed rank with the tool of termination, so He said: (p-446) "to those who have shown hypocrisy" meaning they displayed what they concealed. They showed goodness and exaggerated in concealing their corrupt beliefs, as one who competes with another. They are Abdullah ibn Ubayy and his companions. They said: And hypocrisy is an Islamic term that the Arabs did not know before it, and it is a metaphor from the action of the lizard in its burrows and dens. He depicted their state by saying: "They say to their brothers" meaning in allegiance to misguidance.

And when He gathered them in disbelief, even though they differed in secrecy and open declaration, He described the open declarers with a type of secrecy that necessitates aversion from them and leads to the destruction of those who associate with them. He said: "Those who disbelieved," meaning they covered the lights of the knowledge that guided them to the truth. He specified them with what He conveyed in their condemnation, as they went astray with knowledge. He said: "From the People of the Book," and they are the Banu Nadir. He rebuked them for their lies regarding what they confirmed in the promise, as it is in the realm of what is denied, since they are unable to openly declare their disbelief. So how about confronting their people, the Ansar, and the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, among them in their saying: "If you are expelled," meaning from their homeland in the noble city, and you go out without fighting, "we will surely go out with you." Thus, what was decreed against their brothers regarding expulsion was a consequence entrusted to their words. And when it was known that the hypocrites had relatives among the prominent believers, and it was known that they would stand against them in preventing them from joining them as a counsel and kindness to them, and that the allowance of the Banu Nadir weakened that, they said, confirming their being with them: "And we will not obey you," meaning in your abandonment. The meaning is that if it were assumed that one became close to you like the closeness of the container to what it contains, we would not obey him in neglecting what pleases you, "anyone," meaning asking us to abandon you from the Messenger and the believers. They confirmed with their saying: "Forever," meaning as long as we live. With such determination, the disbeliever deserved eternal punishment in torment. And when they presented in their support what was a consequence against them, they followed it with their saying: "And if you are fought," meaning by any fighter, and you fought and did not go out, "we will surely help you." The verse is from the interweaving: it mentioned expulsion first as evidence against its opposite second, and fighting second as evidence for the omission of its opposite first. The meaning of the verse is that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, sent to the Banu Nadir: "Leave my city and do not dwell with me. You have intended treachery against me, and I have granted you a respite of ten days. Whoever is seen among you after that, I will strike his neck." So he sent to them Ibn Ubayy with what had preceded.

And when their saying is such that it is a statement that the listener judges to be true due to its being confirmed and being an assertion without any question in it, He clarified his state, glorified and exalted is He, by His saying: ﴿And Allah﴾ meaning they say that while the fact is that the One who encompasses everything with power and knowledge ﴿bears witness﴾ to what He knows of their inner selves in the unseen world. And when some of those who hear their saying deny that it does not correspond to reality, and their contradiction in it is certain in the knowledge of Allah, He attributed to them what is only attributed to what the reality has revealed to be non-corresponding. So He said, encouraging the believers to fight them, confirming ﴿Indeed, they﴾ meaning the hypocrites ﴿are liars﴾. And this is one of the greatest signs of prophethood because it is news of the unseen that is far from the norm, with the testimony of what you thought they would not come out, and Allah confirmed it shortly.
