Tafsir for verse: 58:22
22You will not find those who believe in Allah and in the Hereafter having friendship with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even though they may be their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their clan. They are such that Allah has inscribed faith on their hearts, and has supported them with a spirit from Him. He will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, in which they will live forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Allah. Those are the party of Allah. Be assured that it is (the members of) the party of Allah that are the successful.

Commentary

And when it became clear like the sun that whoever is allied with Him, glorified and exalted is He, is victorious, and whoever opposes Him is a loser, the result of it is certainly a warning against allying with the enemies of Allah in the context of the negation that is useful for emphasizing the prohibition against it and deterring from His proximity. He said: "You will not find" meaning after this clarification "a people" meaning people who have strength over what they intend to attempt "believing" meaning renewing faith and maintaining it "in Allah" meaning the One who has the most beautiful names and the highest attributes "and the Last Day" which is the place of recompense for every worker [for all that] he has done, which is the place of wisdom. "They show affection" (p-397) meaning there will be from them affection [not] apparent nor hidden - as indicated by the merging, and the least of it is agreement in appearance. "Whoever opposes Allah" meaning he opposes with hostility in the limits of the Most High King, for opposition is not hidden even if it is hidden, the owner of it conceals it, because the apparent is the title of the hidden, and actions are evidence [of] words, and this leads to an increase in aversion from them. "And His Messenger" for whoever opposes him has indeed opposed the one who sent him. Rather, you will not find them except opposing them, not that they show affection for them. This was further emphasized by his saying: "Even if they were their fathers" those whom Allah has made obedience to them obligatory upon the children in what is good, and this is as Abu Ubaidah Amir ibn al-Jarrah, may Allah be pleased with him, did; he killed his father Abdullah ibn al-Jarrah on the day of Uhud. "Or their sons" those who are created with love for them and their mercy as Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, did; for he called his son on the day of Badr to duel, and said: "Let me, O Messenger of Allah, be in the first rank." The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said to him: "Enjoy yourself with your soul, O Abu Bakr, do you not know that you are in the position of my hearing and my sight?" "Or their brothers" [who] are their supporters (p-398) as Mus'ab ibn Umair, may Allah be pleased with him, did; he killed his brother Ubaid ibn Umair on the day of Uhud, and Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him, broke through the ranks that day against his brother Utbah ibn Abi Waqqas more than once to kill him, but he evaded him like a fox. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, forbade him and said: "Do you want to kill yourself?" And Muhammad ibn Maslamah al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, killed his brother by nursing, Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf, the head of Banu al-Nadir. "Or their clan" those who are their supporters and reinforcements as Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, did; he killed his maternal uncle al-As ibn Hisham ibn al-Mughira on the day of Badr, and Ali, Hamzah, and Ubaydah ibn al-Harith, may Allah be pleased with them, killed on the day of Badr their paternal uncles Utbah and Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah and al-Walid ibn Utbah. And it is reported from al-Thawri that the predecessors used to see that the verse was revealed regarding those who accompany the ruler - ended. And the essence of this is that a person cuts off his hope from others than Allah, and if it is not so, he is not sincere in his faith.

And when there is no bearing on the innocence of one whose condition is like this except for the clear faith, he means by saying: ﴿Those﴾, meaning the greatest in status and the highest in ambition. ﴿He has written﴾ (p-399), meaning He has connected and affirmed the connection, and it is in their hearts like beads in a garment, and like the pattern in the embroidered cloth. So there is no separation for it ﴿in their hearts is faith﴾. He made them vessels for it, and that bore fruit in the light of the inner self and the uprightness of actions in the outward. ﴿And He supported them﴾, meaning He strengthened them, reinforced them, assisted them, encouraged them, honored them, and elevated them ﴿with a spirit﴾, meaning a very noble light by which they understand what He has placed in His Book and the Sunnah of His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, from the treasures of knowledge and action. It is for their hearts like the spirit for the bodies, so they do not engage in any of the conditions of the people of ignorance, like the practice of [zihar]. This support increased in honor by His saying: ﴿from Him﴾, meaning He gave them life through it, so there is no separation of that from them at any time. Thus, it bore fruit for them in the uprightness of the paths, outwardly and inwardly. They overcame with evidence and proofs, and they prevailed with the sword that annihilates the souls. They performed righteous deeds, and they were for the world like lamps. You will not find anything that enters into sincerity more than the alliance with the friends of Allah and the enmity towards His enemies. Rather, it is the essence of sincerity. Whoever inclines towards one who deviates from his religion or flatters an innovator in his creed, Allah removes the light of monotheism from his heart.

And when He informed them of what He has given them in this world, which does not depart from them in the Hereafter, He informed them of what He will give them in the Hereafter, saying: ﴿And He will admit them to gardens﴾, meaning orchards (p-400) whose interiors are concealed due to the abundance of their trees. And He informed about their irrigation by saying: ﴿flowing﴾. And when the waters, if they were to cover the earth, would not have a resting place, He affirmed the flowing by saying: ﴿from beneath them rivers﴾, meaning that it is thus abundant in gardens, trees, open spaces, and dwellings. And when that is only pleasurable with permanence, He said: ﴿abiding therein﴾.

And when that cannot be completed except by the pleasure of its owner, He said: ﴿Allah is pleased﴾ meaning the greatest King to whom belongs all command, so there is no turning to anyone else ﴿about them﴾. And when that cannot complete his joy except by their pleasure so that the goodness of companionship may be completed, He said: ﴿And they are pleased with Him﴾ meaning because He gave them more than they hoped for. And when He informed about them with what pleases every listener, so he longs for their companionship, their association, their company, and their closeness, He praised them and introduced them by saying: ﴿Those﴾ meaning those who are in the highest degree of greatness because they have confined their love to Allah, knowing that there is no benefit [and harm] except by His hand. ﴿The party of Allah﴾ meaning the soldiers of the Most High King who encompasses all attributes of perfection and His allies, for they are the ones who become angry for Him and do not fear the blame of the blamer in Him. And when it became clear from what He has prepared for them and what He has prepared for their opponents that they are the ones specifically entitled to every good, He said on the way of producing from what has passed, confirming what is for their opponents from the evils: ﴿Indeed, the party of Allah﴾ meaning the soldiers of the Most High King, and these are those described and who ﴿are﴾ specifically, not others ﴿are the successful﴾ meaning those who have attained victory in all that they hope for in both abodes. And it has been known from the pleasure from both sides and the partisanship and success that there is no separation from happiness, so this suffices from the restriction of eternity with perpetuity. He has specifically chosen them for that because He has might, power, knowledge, and wisdom. Therefore, He knew the matter of the argument and had mercy on her complaint because it is from His party and He listened to it. And whoever listens to her is one who is pleased with him, and He prohibited [the practice of] zihar because of her complaint, honoring her with His wisdom because it is contrary to wisdom as it is a comparison that is outside the rule of comparisons, and it involves humiliation for the mother who has in His religion the utmost honor by being equated with the wife who is the place of intimacy. And He concluded her verse by saying that whoever transgresses His limits and returns to the conditions of ignorance, he is His opponent, glorified is He, for he is from the party of Satan. Thus, the end of it has returned to its beginning with the clearest evidence on the best path, for this great Qur'an is the noblest discourse and the most upright saying, and this is the intended meaning of what follows it. And there is no doubt that it necessitates glorification and distances from associating partners and comparisons. So glorified is He who revealed it as a verse of everlasting clarity, necessitating faith, suppressing tyranny, throughout the ages and the prolongation of times.
