Commentary
And when their corruption of the ties of kinship was secret, and their swearing to deny that was public, along with the obligation to accept what appeared from them, while He, glorified and exalted is He, knows that they lied in a painful and hurtful manner, it might be that someone might think that as He obligated us to accept what appeared from them in the abode of action, He commands us to accept them in the abode of recompense. He said, denying that (p-391), comforting the believers that they will do that with Him, glorified and exalted is He, after the veil is lifted and the matters are realized. This is because a person is resurrected upon what he died upon, for that is his nature which he cannot depart from, and that will not benefit them. He mentioned the state of eternity and the manifestation of punishment: "The Day Allah will resurrect them" meaning the King who possesses all attributes of perfection by reviving them from what they were in of death and returning them to what they were before it, "all together" He does not leave anyone among them or others except that He returns him to what he was [upon] before his death. "Then they will swear" meaning it will result from the manifestation of complete power for them and witnessing what they used to deny of resurrection and fire that they will swear "to Him" meaning Allah in the Hereafter that they are Muslims. They will say: "By Allah, our Lord, we were not polytheists" [Al-An'am: 23] and similar lies that increase their harm, and do not avail them in any way, following what they are accustomed to of favoring desires and being shortsighted in considering the tangible things they are familiar with. "As they swear" in this world "to you" because you do not know the unseen, while they expect that Allah will expose them as He has done to them repeatedly. Their swearing arises from their belief in their distance from acceptance, for no one swears to you except one who thinks that you deny him; Al-Qushayri said: Their greatest punishment is their belief in the foreignness, and the utmost effort is their being cast on their faces in the abyss of their regret. (p-392) And when what drives them to proceed in that is the weakness of their intellects and their deep involvement in hypocrisy and their return to it until they are resurrected upon something like that, while they know that this will not save them due to His encompassing knowledge, glorified and exalted is He, He expressed it by saying: "And they think" meaning on the Day of Resurrection with their false oaths "that they are upon something" meaning they will gain benefit from it, due to their illusion that their oaths will be accepted by Allah and will save them as they did in this world.
And when He made it clear that their matters have no realities either in their claims or in their oaths or in their calculations, [He said, calling out to them, confirming the denial of their calculations]: "Indeed, they" meaning specifically "are the liars" meaning they are judged to be liars in their calculations and in their claims in both abodes due to their deep-rootedness in describing lies where they do not shy away from lying before Allah.
