Commentary
And when they had wealth and children by which they felt honored, he said, resuming [indicating] that whoever hides behind a shield other than his obedience to Allah so that his worldly life may be safe, he will be exposed to the arrows of [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: taqdeer] from where he does not perceive. Then neither his religion will remain nor will his worldly life be safe: ﴿It will not avail them﴾ meaning in any way ﴿against them﴾ meaning in this world or in the Hereafter, neither by ransom nor otherwise. ﴿Their wealth﴾ and he emphasized the negation by repeating the negation to specify each of them, saying: ﴿Nor their children﴾ meaning by support and defense ﴿from Allah﴾ meaning enrichment that begins from the Sovereign, the Most High, who has no equal. ﴿Anything﴾ meaning of enrichment, even if it is very little. So whatever He intends for them, glorified is He, it will be and it will come to pass, nothing can prevent it. This is a refutation of those among them who said: 'If the Day of Resurrection is real, we will certainly be happier in it than you are now, and we will be supported by our souls, our wealth, and our children.' And when the enrichment that begins from Allah was negated, all other enrichment was also negated. This resulted in his saying: ﴿Those﴾ meaning the far removed from all good [ ﴿are the companions of the Fire﴾ ]. And when the companionship of closeness was understood, it was emphasized by his saying: ﴿They﴾ meaning specifically due to the diminishing of the punishment of others - as they are in the abyss - in comparison to their punishment ﴿in it﴾ meaning specifically without anything that falls short of it ﴿They will abide therein﴾ meaning they will remain, they will be everlasting, and they will be permanent without end.
