Commentary
And when he informed about their state, he followed the news with what would be their outcome. He said, indicating - as Al-Qushayri said - that whoever agrees with the one who is angry has associated himself in deserving the wrath of the one who is angry with him. So whoever turns away from the one who is angry with him from Allah has earned the anger of Allah, and that is enough for humiliation, sorrow, and deprivation. He expressed this in a way that indicated that it is a matter that has been settled: 'Allah has prepared' meaning the one who has magnificent greatness, for there is no equal to Him. He expressed in a way that indicated mockery of them, saying: 'for them is a punishment' meaning a matter that cuts off every sweetness, 'severe' that he knows who sees it and sees them that their very selves are collapsing towards it, weak against it. And when he informed of their punishment, he justified it in a way that indicated that it is occurring in its most complete form. He said, confirming with disdain towards those who used to find their actions good: 'Indeed, they have done evil' meaning they have reached the utmost of what is bad. And it indicated that this was for them like a natural disposition by saying: 'what they used to do' meaning they renewed their actions, continuing in them, not ceasing from their deceit of the believers, nor their counsel to the disbelievers, nor their criticism of Islam and its people, and their transgressions against false oaths. They persisted in that until their practice of it increased their boldness in all sins.
