And when He informed of the encompassing nature of His knowledge as a deterrent for those who are deceived by the length of His forbearance, this was indicated by His awareness of the hypocrisy of the hypocrites, which is the most hidden of matters. He said, marveling, terrifying, and magnifying the status by specifically addressing the highest of creation ﷺ, as a reminder that no one understands this as it should be understood except him: "Did you not see?" And it indicated their distance from good by the preposition of purpose, so He said: "to those who turned away," meaning they exerted their utmost effort to make their allies those who would bring their affairs down to them, "a people" who sought with them honor, deceived by what appeared to them of strength. "Allah was angry" meaning the King (p-386) the Most High, who has no equal, "upon them" meaning upon those who turned away and those who were turned away, because they severed what was between them and Him. The first of them are the hypocrites who allied with the Jews, and He increased their disgrace with His saying, continuing: "What are they" meaning the Jews who are the ones upon whom anger has been invoked, "from you" O believers, to ally with them out of fear of the sword and a desire for peace, "nor from them" meaning the hypocrites, so their allegiance to them is due to a previous love and a connected kinship, to make that an excuse for them. Rather, they are wavering; they are with the believers in their words, and with the disbelievers in their hearts. They only allied with them out of a passion for hypocrisy to approximate what is between them in it, or the meaning could be: what are the hypocrites who turn to the Muslims nor from the Jews who are turned away. And He increased their disgrace with the ugliest of matters that leads to every vile act, so He said, mentioning their state in this union: "And they swear" meaning the hypocrites renew the oath for continuity, and it indicated by the tool of elevation that they are in the utmost audacity in their continuity upon false oaths, with the estimation being: they are audacious "upon lying" in their claim of Islam and other than that from the great sins they fall into. So when they are reproached for it, they hasten to oaths. And when lying may be used in language to refer to what contradicts reality even if it is not intentional, as the one swearing may be unaware of its non-conformity to reality, He said (p-387) negating that and clarifying that they dared to take the false oath: "and they know" meaning that they are liars, so they are deliberate. This is because the Prophet ﷺ said to his companions: "A man will enter upon you whose heart is the heart of a tyrant and he looks with the eyes of a devil." So Abdullah ibn Nabtal entered, and he was blue, dark, short, with a light beard. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Why do you insult me, you and your companions?" So he swore by Allah he did not do it. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: "You did." So he brought his companions, and they swore by Allah they did not insult him, so it was revealed.
