And when He, glorified and exalted is He, established that the messengers are callers to the truth to their master, willingly or unwillingly, by the Book and the sword, and established that all happiness is in following them, and that innovations do not bring about good, even if the devil beautifies their matter and makes it seem good, and that the companions of the one who abrogated the Shari'ah of those before him innovated a good innovation, so they were entrusted to it and most of them became disobedient. This necessitated sending one who would abrogate every previous Shari'ah with an abrogation that will not cease, for there is no prophet after him, and he prohibited innovations with a prohibition that no one had preceded him to. This resulted in His saying, the Most High: "O you who have believed," meaning affirm your belief with a true affirmation in the prophet from what has preceded or in the prophet, blessings and peace be upon him. "Fear Allah," meaning fear His punishment and make a barrier between you and His wrath - for He is the Most Great King - by maintaining proper conduct with Him, and do not feel secure from His cunning. So be cautious [of] Him taking away what He has granted you. Follow the messenger so that you may be safe, and maintain your adherence to his following so that you do not perish. "And believe in His messenger," meaning the one who has no messenger now other than him, with a belief that is combined with your belief in Allah, for belief in him is not correct except with belief in His messenger, and that you remain steadfast in your belief in him, and combine belief in him with belief in those who preceded him, O people of the Book, for his message is universal. He has abrogated all that preceded him from the religions, so beware that envy or anything else does not lead you away from him. So hasten to respond to him and all adhere to his caution, so do not lean towards any innovation at all. "He will give you" a reward for following him, "twofold," meaning two great shares, "of His mercy," as a protection for you from punishment, just as a kifl protects the rider from falling. It is a garment that is tied on the back of the camel, with its front placed on the shoulders and its back on the hindquarters. This protection is due to your belief in him, blessings and peace be upon him, and your belief in those who preceded him, along with the lightness of the deed and the lifting of burdens, which is greater in reward than the one who did good in the pre-Islamic era. And the prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said to the one who asked him about it, "You have embraced Islam based on the good you have done before." And it indicates that the twofold reward is by raising ranks and bestowing special blessings of goodness with His saying: "And He will make for you," meaning along with that, "a light," metaphorically in this world by granting success for deeds from known matters and heart-based knowledge, and physically in the Hereafter due to the deeds. "By which you walk," meaning metaphorically in this world by granting success for deeds, and literally in the Hereafter due to the deeds.

And when man is not free from deficiency, he cannot attain all that is due to the Most Merciful. He said: ﴿And He will forgive you﴾ meaning [what] has slipped from you of forgetfulness, intention, jest, and seriousness. And when He, glorified and exalted is He, established that, He followed it with the definition that forgiveness and what follows it is a comprehensive attribute of Him for whoever seeks it. He said: ﴿And Allah﴾ meaning the One who encompasses all attributes of perfection, greatness, and majesty ﴿is Forgiving﴾ meaning He is profound in erasing sin in essence and effect ﴿and Merciful﴾ meaning He is profound in honoring the one whom He forgives and grants success to act in a way that pleases Him.
