Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, clarified that charity is like the seed which is among the best of profits and the most delightful, He clarified the one who carries it, encouraging it. He said, beginning with 'and', indicating the establishment in all of these attributes: "And those who believed" meaning they established this great truth within themselves "in Allah" meaning the Most High King who has majesty and honor "and His messengers" meaning all of them due to their relationship to Him. So whoever lies about anything concerning one of them or acts in the manner of the denier of him is not a believer in him. "Those" meaning they have high ranks and lofty positions "they are" meaning specifically and not others "the truthful ones" meaning those who are at the utmost of truthfulness and affirmation of what is right for him to affirm who hears him. Al-Qushayri said: The truthful one is the one whose outward and inward are equal. It is said that he is the one who carries the matter upon the more difficult and does not descend to the concessions, nor does he need interpretations. And since the truthful one cannot be deeply rooted in truthfulness except by qualifying for the rank of testimony, He, the Most High, said: "And the martyrs" expressing with what is singular, 'martyr', beginning with 'and' indicating the strength of establishment in each of the two descriptions. [Al-Qushayri said]: They are those who witness with their hearts the inner aspects of connection and engage with their secrets in the abodes of closeness. He magnified the matter further by saying: "with their Lord" meaning the One who has done good to them with closeness [with such a high rank] of testimony to Allah with all that He has sent with His messengers and the past prophets to their nations and the presence in all the delights with testimony in the way of Allah. Mujahid said: Every believer is truthful and a martyr - and he recited this verse. "For them" meaning all those who have passed among those described [with goodness] "is their reward" meaning that which their Lord has made for them "and their light" meaning that which He has increased for them from His grace with His mercy. Those are the companions of the eternal bliss.
And when He mentioned the people of happiness, gathering their types, He followed them with the people of misery for that He said: "And those who disbelieved" meaning they concealed what the lights of their minds and the visions of their thoughts indicated. "And they denied Our signs" in relation to their greatness in comparison to us, whether they were in that concealing or openly declaring, or the scholar acted with it in the manner of the denier. "Those" meaning the ones distanced from goodness [specifically] "are the companions of the Hellfire" meaning the fire which is extreme in its intensity, remaining in it among the sinners. As for others, their entering [it] when they enter is not in the manner of companionship indicating permanence. And those are the liars whose testimony will not be accepted before their Lord. For them is their punishment and [upon them] is their darkness. And the verse from the intertwining: It mentioned truthfulness and what accompanies it first as evidence against its opposites secondly, and Hellfire secondly as evidence for bliss first, and its secret is that the first is greater in honor, and the second is greater in disgrace.
