Commentary
And when this was a sufficient admonition for the sickness of hearts, and revealing the cover of sorrows, his saying produced an urging for turning towards His Book, with which He has mercy upon His servants by sending it down upon the tongue of His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, in a way that indicates its miraculous nature, that it is a speech that draws them to His presence, deterring them from what some of them asked about it, Salman, may Allah be pleased with him, from speaking to them about the Torah and the Gospel. So whenever they asked him about something, Allah, glorified and exalted is He, would send down a verse that would deter them with it and alert them that this Quran contains all that is needed until He sent down this verse, a great deterrent so that no one would think that the Quran is insufficient, frightening them with what happened to the people of the Book from turning away from their Book. Al-Kalbi said it was revealed about the hypocrites a year after the migration. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, said: Allah found the hearts of the believers slow after thirteen years from the descent of the Quran, and He said: "Has the time not come" meaning to soften and end and reach a limit "for those who have believed" meaning those who have affirmed faith with their tongues, whether truthfully or falsely "that their hearts should humbly submit" meaning that they should have a high rank in faith by softening, calming, submitting, humbling, and finding tranquility, so they would turn away from the transient and turn towards the everlasting "their hearts to the remembrance of Allah" (p-279) meaning the Greatest King, from whom there is no good except from Him. So the one who was lying would be truthful in his faith, and the one who was weak would grow strong in religion. Therefore, he should not seek for that his religion a remedy nor for the sickness of his heart a cure in other than the Quran, for the remembrance of Allah clears the echoes of hearts and polishes their mirrors.
And when the remembrance alone is sufficient for humility, repentance, and submission because it is a gathering of every desire and a source of every fear, and there are people who have no access to what is with Him, glorified and exalted is He, from majesty and honor, He said: "And what has been sent down" meaning Allah, the Exalted, gradually - according to the reading of the group with emphasis. And what was found to be sent down from Allah upon the seal of His messengers, blessings and peace be upon him, according to the reading of Nafi and Hafs from Asim and Ruwais, differing from him from Yaqub with leniency "from the truth" meaning from the promise, warning, admonition, and other than that upon your Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, from the Quran, indicating that other than this remembrance has been infiltrated, and as for this, it is firmly established, firmly that no one can remove it.
And when the competition and rivalry have a great matter in stirring the ambitions of the noble and those of high rank, He said: "And let them not be like those" And when knowledge by itself is sufficient for raising ambition, how much more so if it is from Allah? How much more so if it is with a Book? Indicating that by building for the unknown, He said: "They were given the Book" meaning if the coming was from other than Allah, it would be worthy of guidance, so how is it when it is from Him? And when the sending down of books was not except upon the Children of Israel (p-280) it was not encompassing the past time, He included the neighbor and said: "Before" meaning before what was sent down to you, and they are the Jews and the Christians.
And when they were, at every little moment, crossing over, he said, referring to ﴿They were given the Book﴾ ﴿And a long time passed over them﴾, meaning the time that we set for their honor and extended for their elevation from the beginning of their being given the Book, which is meant to soften hearts. The term 'the long time' refers to the entire duration and its end. Likewise, the end is indicated by the grammarians' saying: 'From' for the beginning of the end and 'to' for its conclusion. What is meant is the entire duration. ﴿So their hearts became hard﴾, meaning they became rigid and twisted to the extent that they did not respond to acts of obedience and goodness. They were, at every little moment, in severe obstinacy towards their Prophets, blessings and peace be upon him, asking them for the proposed matters. As for after they were given it, they became more distant in hardness. They inclined towards the abode of misery with all of themselves and turned away from the abode of purity, thus they were drawn to destruction by following desires. Al-Qushayri said: The hardness of the heart occurs only from following desires, and desires and purity do not coexist.
And when the estimation was: some of them remained in a state of instability, he added to it his saying: ﴿And many of them﴾, their hardness expelled them completely from the religion, so they are ﴿transgressors﴾, meaning deeply rooted in the description of proceeding to exit from the circle of truth which the Book has transgressed for them. And from Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: 'There was no interval between their Islam and the descent of this verse in which Allah admonishes them except four years.' - Narrated by al-Tabarani in al-Kabir. Al-Haythami said: And in it is Musa ibn Ya'qub al-Rab'i, whom Ibn Ma'in trusted and others, while Ibn al-Madini weakened him, and the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. - End.
