﴿They call out to them﴾ meaning the hypocrites, they continue to call while in darkness to those who have believed, they show kindness to them during this saying and striking: ﴿Did we not used to﴾ meaning entirely (p-276) ﴿be with you﴾ meaning in what you were in of the religion, so we deserve to share in what you have turned to because of that [religion] in which we were with you. ﴿They said﴾ meaning those who have believed ﴿Yes﴾ you were indeed with us ﴿But you caused yourselves to be tested﴾ meaning you were by what you had of wavering testing yourselves ﴿by mixing with it﴾ by testing the conditions of the religion in a way that altered it, leading it away from what it was upon of the original nature of uprightness. You wanted by that for clear matters to appear to you in it to free yourselves from doubts so you could be sincere. You did not believe in the unseen, so you destroyed it and also followed the matters by which you were being tested [from] desires, thus you made it obligatory for yourselves to turn away from the higher inner matters. ﴿And you waited﴾ meaning you made it a duty for yourselves to remove yourselves from the original nature, so you delayed and waited to see the matter with your own eyes or you did not do as we did of believing in the unseen and leaving experimentation and attributing what happens to us of what contains a trial to our own shortcomings. Whenever something occurred that shook us, we would say: This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us, and Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth, and that only increased us in faith and submission. And you also waited for the turns of the people of faith to show your hypocrisy. ﴿And you doubted﴾ meaning you questioned by making yourselves doubt with that waiting. ﴿And the hopes deceived you﴾ meaning what you wished for, meaning you wanted and estimated from the desires that came with a great craving of empty ambitions that have no cause except the craving of the self itself by what you expected for us from the turns of evil. ﴿Until the command of Allah came﴾ meaning the decree of the King characterized by all attributes of perfection, for there is no equal to Him nor is there any contradiction to His saying from death, and preliminaries from astonishing matters, (p-277) so just as you were in the world negligent, you were in this place. ﴿And you were deceived by Allah﴾ meaning the King who has all greatness, for He is where He does not break the promise, and He is the Loving Guardian. ﴿The deceiver﴾ meaning one [who has] no creation except lies, and he is the devil, and he is the envious enemy. For he diversifies for you with his deception the procrastination and says: Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful, [and] Pardoning, Generous. And what could your sins be to Him while He is Great, Beneficent, and Forbearing, and similar to this? He continues until he causes a person to fall, and when he causes him to fall, he continues upon him similarly until he persists, and when he persists, the motivator for him then becomes from his own self, thus he becomes at the mercy of his own hand.
