Commentary

And when He favored the predecessors with spending, and promised the followers with the best reward for good following, and indicated that perhaps He would include them with some of them in the purity of sincerity, so that the motivations for giving would be abundant, this resulted in His saying, naming the charity which is in the form of giving without compensation as a loan, which is giving with compensation, encouraging it for what He has prepared for it of the certain reward. So how if it is multiplied: ﴿Who﴾ And He emphasized by the indication with His saying: ﴿This﴾ for the reason of what the souls have of stinginess ﴿Who lends to Allah﴾ meaning He gives to the One who has all the attributes of majesty and honor by giving to the deserving for His sake a gift from His wealth that is in the form of a loan, hoping for the reward ﴿A good loan﴾ meaning pure, free of any conditions, seeking through it the best of the good forms, pleasing the soul without any favor or hardship through procrastination or the like.

And when what Allah gives to the spender of the reward is caused by his spending, He connected it with the letter 'fa' and said, adding to ﴿Lends﴾ ﴿So He will multiply it for him﴾ encouraging it by making it emphatic through the multiplication first and making it from the category of mutual action second. Likewise, the preference in the reading of Ibn Kathir, Ibn Amer, and Yaqub is ﴿So He will multiply it﴾ and Ibn Amer [and Yaqub] read it in the accusative as a response to the inquiry, confirming the connection and the causation. And when the multiplication from Him, glorified is He, is something whose essence only He knows, He said: ﴿And for him﴾ meaning the lender, after what you comprehend of the multiplication, an increase beyond that ﴿A reward﴾ the measure of which only Allah knows, and this is the meaning of His description with the saying: ﴿Generous﴾ meaning good, pure, flourishing, and growing.
