Commentary
And when he divided them into three categories and elaborated on their division, he mentioned their states and began that by informing that the news is not like the news, just as the eye is not like the trace. He said: ﴿So the companions of the right﴾, meaning the direction of the right and its place and their deeds. Then he magnified their matter by expressing astonishment at their state by saying, indicating that they are [worthy] to be asked about what the right comprehends of goodness and blessing. How about when he expressed it in a form of exaggeration, saying: ﴿What﴾, which is a second subject, ﴿the companions of the right﴾, meaning the direction of the right and its place and their deeds. The sentence is a news about the first, and the connection is the repetition of the subject by its wording. Abu Hayyan, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Most often this occurs in a context of intimidation and magnification.
And Imam Abu Ja'far ibn al-Zubair said: When the excuse was advanced in the two preceding surahs and the confirmation of the great proofs, and he informed at the end of Surah al-Qamar that every occurrence in the world is by His decree, glorified is He, and His predestination ﴿Indeed, We created everything by decree﴾ [al-Qamar: 49] ﴿And everything they did is in the records﴾ [al-Qamar: 52]. And He informed them, glorified is He, in the Event about their division in the Hereafter, so He opened the mention of the Hour ﴿When the Event occurs﴾ [al-Waqi'a: 1] until His saying: ﴿And you will be three groups﴾ [al-Waqi'a: 7]. This surah was dedicated to informing about their states in the Hereafter, and it was prefaced by that just as it was previously dedicated to informing about their state in this abode. What has been conveyed in the three surahs follows this style, being governed by the call for encouragement and intimidation, gently towards the servants and mercy, and its beginnings are based on what I have mentioned explicitly, not implicitly, and on completeness, not by indication and gesture. For this reason, He said, exalted is He, at the end of the last narratives in this surah: ﴿This is their hospitality on the Day of Judgment﴾ [al-Waqi'a: 56]. He informed that this is their state on the Day of Recompense, and He had previously presented their worldly state in the two surahs before and emphasized the prior definition in what follows, and that is His saying: ﴿So if he is among those brought near﴾ [al-Waqi'a: 88] until its conclusion - ended.
