Commentary

And when he mentioned the ultimate goals of its alarming and frightening principles, he mentioned the principles of its goals and said: ﴿And you were﴾ meaning you were divided according to what was in your natures and dispositions in this world ﴿into three kinds﴾ meaning categories, the wisdom of one type cannot be complete except by having it [two divisions]: the higher and the lower, so that this may be a clearer indication of the completeness of ability. They are the companions of the right, divided into the foremost, and they are the ones brought near, and into the latter, and they are the righteous or the companions of the right. It is as if they are from the people of the heart, which is the equal justice from the companions of the left to the last of the companions of the right. So the companions of the equal are the ones brought near, and the remainder of the companions of the right are the companions of the right, and the companions of the left are the companions of the third division. Each of the three is divided into higher and lower. The three divisions have been clarified at the end of the surah. Al-Baydawi said: And every type that is mentioned or will be mentioned with another type is a pair.
