And when the answer was certainly: Are you the one who does that alone? [He said] clarifying that no one else has planted it, for the complete doer is the one who protects what he has done from what corrupts it. And whoever intends to corrupt it, no one can prevent him. ﴿If We wished﴾ means if We dealt with you with the attribute of greatness. And He affirmed that their action is the action of the one who is safe from that, while they are in utmost distance from their crop perishing as they planted it, or because the food is more important than the drink and greater, for it is the foundation for sustaining the body, and the drink is secondary to it. So He said: ﴿We would have made it﴾ meaning with that greatness ﴿rubble﴾ meaning broken and shattered, with no grain in it before the growth, so that it would not accept emergence, or after it due to extreme cold or deadly heat or otherwise, so it would not be benefited from. ﴿So you remained﴾ meaning: you remained because of that during the day at the time of great work and at all times, and you left all that is important to you. ﴿Joking﴾ He said in the dictionary: He amused them with the pleasantness of speech: he entertained them with it. And perhaps this indicates that His habit, glorified and exalted is He, is near relief in the hardships of this world, so that a person is capable of gratitude, and he has no excuse for abandoning it. And the meaning is that you, with your frequent habit of relief after hardship, are close to despair when calamity first strikes you, so you turn to excessive complaining, and the multitude of experiences will never benefit you in bringing forth blessings.
