Commentary
And when he described them with luxury and insistence on extravagance, and that was accompanied by idleness, which necessitates ignorance and corruption leading to misery, he mentioned their denial of what is clearer than that. He said, emphasizing what the expression means by sin through the word 'hath', that they would swear by Allah with all their oaths that they would not be resurrected and that the messengers are liars: ﴿And they would say﴾, meaning a renewed denial of that, always with rudeness or stubbornness: ﴿Will we be resurrected then?﴾ He omitted the doer for the indication of 'resurrected' upon it, and it does not act because the question and the particle of emphasis that precede it have the meaning of ﴿We have died﴾, meaning there is no remedy for the return of our souls in any way. ﴿And we were﴾, meaning a stable existence, ﴿dust and bones﴾. And when their questioning was for the denial that there is any remedy in the establishment of their bodies or the return of their souls, he repeated the question to emphasize their denial, saying: ﴿Are we indeed to be resurrected?﴾ meaning our resurrection is certain and established at a moment from time. They confirmed to make their denial of what is less than the confirmed in the first place.
