Commentary
And when it became evident that he is of the character of the base, it is a place of heat, constriction, meanness, and severity. He explained it by saying: "Indeed, they" confirmed it, even if among them are those in need due to their gathering in seeking to oppose the religion by following desires. This is because what has passed for them in relation to this punishment is a state of comfort. He expressed it by the term 'being' as an indication of their deep-rootedness in that, even if by their nature and disposition they are prepared for it. He said: "They were" meaning in this world. And when that was associated with being immersed in time by the inclination of natures, he removed the barrier and said: "Before that" meaning the great matter that they reached. "Living luxuriously" meaning in abundance of living, indulging in desires, enjoying them, and being established in them due to the inclination of their natures towards them. Thus, what is in their dispositions of being inclined towards luxury resulted in a lack of consideration and taking admonition in this world, and arrogance towards the callers to Allah. In the Hereafter, there is great pain due to the fragility of their bodies, which are prepared for luxury by their habituation to comfort, by being inclined towards it and relying upon it.
