And when he completed the description of what is in the two praiseworthy categories, and by it the divisions of the people of the right were completed, those who are the companions of the heart and the right, he followed them with their opposites and said: ﴿And the companions of the left﴾, meaning the direction which the Arabs consider to be ominous. He expressed it as a reference to that which is lesser and of lesser fortune. It is apparent that they are the lowest of the companions of misfortune, just as the companions of the right are below the foremost among the companions of the right. Then he magnified their blame and misfortune and said: ﴿What are the companions of the left﴾, meaning that they are in a state of ill omen that is worthy of being asked about.
