Commentary

And when there was in this from the terror that which cuts the hearts of the aware, He confirmed it by His saying and added what He wills of it also by His saying, changing from the first condition some of what enters into raising and lowering: 'When the earth is shaken' meaning all of it, despite its vastness and weight, with the slightest matter. 'A shaking' meaning it was shaken with a severe shaking violently, so it was lowered and raised, then it was shaken with its people with a severe shaking. Al-Baghawi said: And 'rajj' in the language means movement.
