Commentary

And when he mentioned what emerges in the mountains, the parched places, and the sands, he followed it with what only emerges upon the waters, indicating that their locations are in utmost ease and irrigation. He said: ﴿And talh﴾, meaning the tree of bananas or dates. Al-Hasan said: It is a tree that has a cool shade and a pleasant scent. Al-Farra' and Abu 'Ubaidah said: It is large trees that have thorns. It is said to be the umm of Ghaylan, and it has abundant flowers. It is narrated from Abu Turab al-Nakshabi that he was traveling with a group of Sufis on the path of reliance. They became hungry for several days, so he said: Do you want to eat? They said: Yes. He struck his hand on a Ghaylan tree, and there were clusters of bananas on it. They ate except for one young man among them, who said: I will not eat and will not accompany you after this, for I was walking without knowledge, and now you have become my knowledge. Whenever I am hungry, my soul turns to you.

﴿Manduud﴾ means arranged in layers from its top to its bottom, stacked, with some of it overlapping the other in a manner that is in utmost admiration. It is said in the dictionary: The talh is a great tree, and the tal' is the banana, and the tal' from the date palm is something that emerges as if it were two closed sandals, and the load between them is manduud, and the end is defined, or what appears from its fruit at the first appearance.
