Commentary
And when the exception was the criterion of generality, he presented it in the form of an exception with his saying: "Except for a saying." This means it is in the utmost gentleness and delicacy, as indicated by what is based on what preceded it of virtues, along with what the root of the word 'saying' indicates. And when the listener longed for it by the expression he mentioned, he clarified it with his saying: "Peace." And he indicated its continuity by repeating it, saying: "Peace." This means that there does not occur in the soul nor appear in the senses from them any saying except that it indicates safety, for there is no defect in it at all. And he presented it in the manner of a connected exception, indicating that if there is any idle talk in it, then that is sufficient. And it is what assures them, comforts them, and gives them good tidings, while also indicating good companionship, beautiful companionship, refinement of morals, and purity of affection.
