Commentary

And when He affirmed for her perfection and made it for them, He negated deficiency from her, saying: "They do not hear" meaning in any state of affairs, "in it no idle talk" meaning anything that does not benefit, for indeed the most severe is with the All-Hearing, the All-Wise. That is, idle talk is what is worthless. "And no sin" meaning what occurs by which sin is incurred or the relation to sin. Rather, their movements and stillness are all in the pleasure of Allah. And nothing has severed the hearts of those who are journeying to Allah except these two qualities. While one of them is building what benefits him, striving in the construction, when his nature overcomes him, he destroys most of what he built. And while he thinks he has drawn near, if he realizes with something like that that he has actually distanced himself, his abode has become distant and his place of cultivation has extended. So, Allah is the One whose help is sought.
