Commentary
And when He clarified the greatness of their status and attributed the precedence to them, He translated it by removing the action from them with His saying: ﴿Those﴾ meaning the very high-ranking ones among those who are the companions of the right hand ﴿the near ones﴾ meaning those whom Allah, glorified and exalted is He, has chosen for precedence, so He intended them for His closeness or bestowed upon them [with His closeness]. If it were not for His action in bringing them near, they would not have been precedents. Al-Razi said in Al-Lawa'ih: The near ones have freed themselves from their souls, so all their actions are for Allah, in religion and in this world, in the right of Allah and the right of the people, and both of them are, for them, the right of Allah. The world, for them, is their hereafter because they observe what appears to them from His dominion, and they receive it with acceptance and submission. They are of two types: one type has their hearts immersed in His majesty and greatness, and they are possessed by His awe, so the truth employs them. The other type has loosened their reins, so the matter is easier for them because they have approached with their hearts this humility, and their position is higher, so they are the trusted ones of Allah in His land. Therefore, the matter is easier for them because they have surpassed - and that is the end.
