Commentary
And when he mentioned the two divisions, and each of them has two divisions, he mentioned the highest of the people of the first division, encouraging them towards their best state. He did not divide the people of the left side, out of fear of their bad outcome. He said: "And the foremost" meaning: those who hasten to acts of obedience, the companions of the two gardens in the presence of the Most Merciful, and they are the companions of the heart. "The foremost" meaning: they are those who deserve the description of being foremost, and no one else, because it is a rank higher than their rank. Therefore, they hastened to their rank, which is their garden. They are two divisions, as will come from Al-Razi and from Al-Mahdawi that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "The foremost are those who, when given the truth, accept it; and when asked for it, they give it; and they judge for the people as they would judge for themselves."
