Commentary
And when it became known from what was mentioned at the beginning of this speech regarding fear along with the mention of the description of honor, and its end from the mention of goodness that this group is good-doers, and it was known that the workers are of different ranks, and that each rank has its reward according to the measure of its deeds, the situation required clarifying what has been prepared for those below them: ﴿and below them﴾ meaning: from the lowest place, in rank from what is beneath the two gardens of these good-doers [the close ones ﴿two gardens﴾ meaning for each one from below these good-doers] among the fearful, who are the companions of the right hand. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: below them in rank, and Ibn Burjan made the four distributed among all. And that the specification of this number indicates that it will be inclusive of what is in the four seasons of this world: winter, spring, summer, and autumn. And this was explained by the saying of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: "Two gardens of gold have been given to me, and what is in them, and two gardens of silver have been given to me, and what is in them." Then it was allowed that what is meant by the lower is the lowest to the human, which is the Barzakh, so these two would be for the people of the Barzakh just as it is said ﴿and indeed for those who wronged is a punishment below that﴾ [Al-Tur: 47] from the punishment of the grave.
