Commentary
And when the most evident proof of non-existence is need, and the proof of the continuity of existence is wealth, he said as a proof of what preceded: ﴿He asks Him﴾ meaning: in the manner of renewal and continuity ﴿Who is in the heavens﴾ meaning: all of them ﴿and the earth﴾ meaning: all of them, whether speaking or silent, by the tongue of state or saying [or both]. And when it was as if it were said: What does He do when asked, and the least of the limited, tangible times is 'today,' he expressed it as the least of time just as he expressed [it] as the lightest of weights by the atom, and he said in response to that: ﴿Every day﴾ meaning: at any time from the times, from the day of Saturday, and upon the Jews is the curse of Allah and His anger, as they said on Saturday what is contrary to His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿And We certainly created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days, and We were not touched by weariness﴾ [Qaf: 38] ﴿And His preservation of them does not burden Him; He is the Most High, the Most Great﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 255] ﴿He is in a matter﴾ meaning: of bringing into existence and renewing meanings or the negation of that. Al-Qushayri said: [in] the arts of the categories of created beings and what He brings upon them from the differences in attributes - this has ended.
And it is affairs that He manifests, not affairs that He initiates. His power relates according to His will to what knowledge has pertained to in eternity that it will be or be negated in its times. So everything is submissive to Him, humbled before Him, prostrating to His greatness, witnessing His power, indicating Him ﴿And there is nothing except that it glorifies Him with praise﴾ [Al-Isra: 44]. And that expression - although it is among the greatest of blessings - is the most evident proof of (p-168) His attributes of perfection [for Him and the attributes of] deficiency for the changing things, and that they are non-existence in themselves, and because they are blessings, he said:
