Commentary
And when the face is the most honorable of what exists, and it is expressed by it regarding what is intended by the owner of the face, while it cannot be imagined that the face remains without its owner, the expression by it about the reality of that thing is greater and more indicative of perfection. It is established among the people of the Shari'ah that glorified and exalted is He, there is nothing like Him, so no one among them should imagine that the expression by it implies deficiency. He said: ﴿And it remains﴾ meaning: after the annihilation of all, a continuous existence to which there is no end. ﴿The face of your Lord﴾ means: the One who nurtures you with the message and the elevation through this revelation to what cannot be limited of knowledge. Every action intended by Him, glorified and exalted is He, is purely for His face. And when He mentioned His distinction from the created beings, He described Him with complete encompassing, purity, and praise. He said, describing the face because what is meant by it is the essence which is the most honorable, expressing by it because it is more eloquent than 'the owner' and by what alerts to the glorification from what might be imagined from the mention of the face as a dull, lifeless entity that measures the unseen - which is not afflicted by need nor does any deficiency touch His most sacred essence - by the witness which is all deficiency and need. ﴿The Lord of Glory﴾ means: the greatness that cannot be aspired to, and it is a description of His essence which necessitates His being revered above all that is not befitting to Him. ﴿And honor﴾ means: the general kindness, and it is a description of His action.
