Commentary

And when the meeting of the two fluids occurs, especially with the constant disturbance of mixing, it transforms the qualities of one or both of them into the qualities of the other. The soul longs for a barrier against such mixing in the two seas. He then states: "Between them is a barrier"; meaning a great barrier of pure power over the first and the flowing of the earth over the second, which prevents them from mixing despite their meeting. Ibn Burjan said: The barrier is that which is neither this nor that. Likewise, between the plain and the mountain, there is a barrier called a slope. Similarly, between night and day, there is a barrier called twilight. Likewise, between this world and the Hereafter, there is a barrier that is neither of this nor of that, nor is it outside of both. Likewise, the two springs are two barriers between winter and summer, akin to the twilight of the beginning of the day and the twilight of its end. He has placed between every two types of existents a barrier that is neither of this nor of that, and it is from both, like inanimate objects, plants, and animals.

And when the result of that is thus, he said: "They do not transgress"; meaning: they do not exceed in the destruction of people as they did when they destroyed those on earth in the days of Noah, blessings and peace be upon him. Nor does one of them transgress against the other through competition, nor do they exceed what their Creator and Planner has set for them, neither in the apparent nor in the hidden. Whenever you dig beside the salty water, you find sweet water, and if you bring the hole closer to it, indeed, the closer it is, the sweeter it becomes. So Allah, glorified is He, mixed them in the sight of the eye and placed a barrier between them in the sight of the eye of power. This, while they are both inanimate and have no speech or perception, how can some of you transgress against others, O you who are rational and discerning?
