Commentary
And when he mentioned what is sustenance from the fruits, and it is in the utmost length, he followed it with the origin in sustenance for people and animals, and it is in a state of brevity. He said, mentioning its fruit because it is the intended one: ﴿And the grain﴾ meaning: from wheat and others. He pointed out the completeness of the ability after indicating the distinction of these mentioned, while the origin of all is water by His saying: ﴿The one with stalks﴾ meaning the leaves and herbs which, when the weight of the grain is removed from it, is what the winds blow away, and it is the straw which is from the sustenance of the animals.
And when the basil is applied to every plant [with a good scent specifically, and to every plant] in general, he followed it with this to encompass and specify all that he mentioned from the other plants and otherwise in a way that reminds of His blessings with the sustenance of the souls after he mentioned the sustenance of the bodies, so he said: ﴿And the basil﴾.
