Commentary
And when the state of affairs was speaking that they were saying: 'This is all, so which of the two groups is better in position and more excellent in gathering?' Some of them said: 'If we are resurrected, we will be given wealth and children.' There is no doubt that they were in a state of utmost improbability due to the believers overcoming them despite their fewness and weakness. He began the response by saying: 'They will be defeated' by an easier matter than any conqueror, with a promise that there is no contradiction in it. The reading of the majority with the passive form indicates greatness in the manner of the speech of the capable ones. It is more eloquent than the reading of Ya'qub with the active form which explicitly indicates greatness. The gathering that has been mentioned was exaggerated in its number, so Allah fulfilled His promise to them, and they were defeated on the Day of Badr and elsewhere in this world soon after. They continued to weaken until their affair completely diminished and their secret vanished entirely. This is among the clear signs of prophethood. 'And they will turn their backs' means: their turning away will all be of this kind, that there will be a ruler over them from among them with the defeat, because he did not rule them in a state of defeat, a type of humiliation they hope for in the choice. Each of the individuals of turning away and the victor and the gathering of the rulers is more eloquent than if something else were placed in its position and more cutting to the obstinacy.
