Commentary
And when they reached this limit of persistence in disbelief, despite the profound admonitions and the appeals of the One in a position of strength, they deserved the greatest wrath. The address turned away from them as a sign of that, and as a humiliation and contempt for them, and a turning towards the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, for his consolation. He said, referring to what you can understand: Do they claim, out of ignorance and stubbornness, something from these two matters: ﴿Or do they say﴾ meaning: These people whom you are among, treating them gently in speech and kind words, and beautiful forgiveness, in obedience to Our command, in magnification of your status, have they belittled you: ﴿We are all﴾ meaning: a single assembly, greatly united in their gathering, so it is ultimately in the utmost of closeness, with no separation from it. ﴿Victorious﴾ meaning: over everyone who opposes them, because they are like a single heart. The singular is for the word 'all' and for understanding this meaning, or that each one is judged to be victorious.
