Commentary
And when it was as if it was said: So what did they do when that came to them? He said: ﴿They denied﴾ meaning a great denial, being disdainful ﴿of Our signs﴾ which Moses, peace be upon him, brought to them and others, for the sake of their denial of it despite its greatness that certainly indicates it is from Us.
And when the miracles of the ordinary course of events were, as previously mentioned, equal in their indication of the truth of the one bringing them, and they had determined that whatever sign came to them, they would deny it, it was as if every sign had come to them. Therefore, he said: ﴿All of them﴾ and he caused this saying to lead to: ﴿So We seized them﴾ meaning: by that which We have of greatness, in a manner similar to how We seized the people of Noah by drowning, ﴿A seizing of the Mighty﴾ meaning: nothing overcomes Him, and He overcomes everything ﴿The All-Powerful﴾ meaning: He does not hasten in taking action because He does not fear missing out nor does He fear a successor to His judgment, reaching a power to a degree that description cannot comprehend its essence, for the form of the causative verb is based on hastening, and whoever hastens in an action is ignorant of himself in it. Thus, it was in the most complete of ways, and this goal is what is intended, nothing else. So it is a representation that He, glorified and exalted is He, addresses us with what we worship, and with this exaggeration, none of them was diverted. And the stories were concluded as they were opened with the punishment of the corruptors by drowning, so that the conclusion would match the beginning. And the salvation of the reformers from the earlier ones was by the ship, and the salvation of the reformers from the later ones by the land of the sea was their ship, so that the conclusion would be greater than the beginning, as is the case with the people of power.
