Commentary

And when he warned and gave glad tidings, he said, informing that he is encompassing knowledge of their matter before the response to the splitting of the moon. And he did not split it out of desire for their faith, but to inform them of their abandonment. He confirmed for whoever places their hope in that the frequent occurrence of the verses may necessitate for them the belief that what has come to them is not sufficient: ﴿And indeed, there has come to them﴾ from the aspect of the splitting ﴿of news﴾, meaning: the great matters that are seen and heard, which deserve to be informed of with great news, especially what has come in the Qur'an regarding the details of the foundations of the religion and its branches, and the news of the former and the latter, the first and the last. ﴿What is in it﴾ specifically ﴿is a deterrent﴾, meaning: a place for deterrence, such that there should be for them a great deterrence from what is in it of falsehood. However, none were deterred from it except for whom Allah willed. Al-Qushayri said: Because Allah has cast over their eyes veils of ignorance, so they became blind to the places of guidance.
