Commentary
And when this is the utmost of blame for those who deserve the utmost of praise, He, the Exalted, responded with a warning to His servants so that they do not speak of what they know to be false or say what they do not know to be true by His saying: ﴿They will know﴾ with a promise that there is no changing in it. And since the intended meaning is to bring closer the fact that it is more severe in the threat, He said: ﴿Tomorrow﴾ meaning in the near forthcoming time because everything that is confirmed to happen is near at the time of the descent of punishment in this world and on the Day of Resurrection. The reading of Ibn 'Amir, Hamzah, and Ruways from Ya'qub with the address is a turning that indicates the utmost of anger ﴿Who is the lying, wicked one?﴾ meaning: the lying and the wicked, which is the contempt of people and the arrogance over what they have shown of the truth, is specific to him and intended for him, not extending to those who throw it at him. This is because they have made lying their habit and it does not extend to them until something of it is claimed for a righteous one, blessings and peace be upon him. Thus, the speech is specific to them in lying, limited to them in its context in this ambiguous and just manner, in which there is a terror of the heart and a shaking of the soul that only Allah, the Exalted, truly knows. And the more a person is naturally inclined to Islam and has more knowledge, the greater his taste will be.
