Commentary
And when that was extraordinary for the norm, it was possible that there could be another extraordinary event in the ship by its being settled on the surface of the water without movement. He clarified that the matter is not as such, so he said, manifesting another extraordinary event in its running: "It runs" meaning the ship "by Our eyes" meaning it is protected from entering the sea of darkness, or that other calamities come upon it, by Our protection over what We have of greatness, the protection of one who looks at a thing frequently and does not lose sight of it at all. They allowed that it could be a plural form of breaking for the eye of the water. Then he explained that by saying: "As a reward" meaning: for Our servant Noah, peace be upon him. However, he expressed it here in a way that conveys the reason so that the listener may beware of the occurrence of such punishment for him if he were to act like his people. He said: "For whom" and he expressed the long duration of their disbelief by saying: "It was disbelieved" meaning disbelief occurred to him while it is the greatest of blessings. He said about the people of that time, and that is the reward of one who disbelieves in blessings. It is permissible that what is meant by it is his people, indicating that disbelief occurred among them as if they were predisposed to it, until it was as if it had befallen them due to the agreement with the reading of Mujahid with the active form.
