Commentary

And when the approach to the Divine Presence - which is prepared for receiving the revelation - is of such highness and greatness that it cannot be described, He indicated this with the tool of relaxation and said: ﴿Then﴾ meaning after that great establishment ﴿drew near﴾ meaning Gabriel, peace be upon him, from the Most Sacred Presence, an approach of an increase in honor, not an approach of distance. Every nearness that is from Him, glorified and exalted is He, is such that, while He is exalted above distance, it can be in two ways: nearness to every existing thing from Himself, and nearness of guardianship, so that the hearing and sight of the existing thing is in the sense that he does not hear or see except what He is pleased with - this was indicated by Ibn Burjan. He took the revelation which He permitted him to take at that time ﴿and then descended﴾ after that as a Messenger from Allah to your companion, meaning it was sent down to him in a descent that is like one who is descending to him by a rope, so he reached him and did not separate from his place in the highest horizon due to the strength and firmness he possesses. Al-Baydawi said: For indeed, the descent is a flowing with a connection, like the descent of the fruit.
