Commentary
And he gave a little and ceased. This means he cut off that giving based on his toil and its little amount. He invalidated it and corrupted it, so he became like the digger who reached in his digging a solid rock. It is said to the digger of the well: he has reached a mountain when he reaches a mountain, and he has ceased when he reaches a solid rock, meaning a great, strong cliff where tools cannot work in it. Thus, he is unable to achieve anything of his knowledge with it, nor can he penetrate it with any of his tricks. Previously, when he encountered the soft soil, he thought that nothing would prevent him from what he wanted. This is a clear, witnessed evidence that no one among creation has knowledge of what Allah has bestowed upon him in himself, let alone others. Therefore, it is not appropriate for anyone to praise himself or others. It was said: This was revealed concerning Al-Walid ibn Al-Mughira, who accepted Islam and then apostatized due to the reproach of some of the polytheists against him, and his saying to him, 'Return, and I will bear the punishment for you.' This applies to everyone who has outwardly apostatized, or has acted hypocritically, or has indulged in sins after his faith, turning away from righteous deeds.
