Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, commanded him to turn away from those who turned away from the honor of mentioning the Greatest King and seeking refuge in Him, and He forbade him from praising due to ignorance of the consequences. Some people had indeed apostatized from Islam. The reason for their apostasy was his ﷺ informing them of some of what he saw of the great signs on the night of Isra. When the prostration of Al-Najm was revealed to him ﷺ, he prostrated in it ﷺ, and with him prostrated the Muslims, the polytheists, the jinn, and mankind. No one among creation expected their turning back on their heels after that, not even the apostates. This was caused by his saying: 'Have you seen?' meaning, 'Inform me about' 'the one who turned away,' meaning, from Our mention after he had been eager for it, thinking he and his people were deeply rooted in their faith and deeds during the days of his faith.
