Commentary
That is, the matter that is extreme in ignorance and ugliness. Their limit is the end of their reaching and the place of their reaching and what has occurred to them. He mocked them by saying, "of knowledge" that they have no knowledge because the eyes of their insight are blind. Their visions are thick and dark, not revealing the view of the Hereafter, which is the essence of all knowledge. Then he explained this sentence by saying, confirming certainly the futility of the hope of anyone who thinks that his admonition and words will bring anyone back from his misguidance, even if he is eloquent in his matter and his supplication in secret and openly. And it is made known that this is only from Allah. So whoever admonishes Him, glorified and exalted is He, hoping for Him in his faith, is likely to benefit from it, as was the case in the admonition of Mus'ab ibn Umair, may Allah be pleased with him, when Usaid ibn Hudhayr and Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, may Allah be pleased with them, inclined towards him in one hour, as is well-known. Indeed, your Lord, that is, the One who is good to you by sending and otherwise, He alone knows who has gone astray from His path, in continuous misguidance. So do not place your hope that His knowledge reaches beyond this world. He expressed by mentioning the Lord that the misguidance of this is from the goodness towards him, blessings and peace be upon him, for if he had entered into his religion, he would have corrupted more than he would have rectified, as He, the Most High, said: "And if they had entered among you, they would have only added to you nothing but confusion and in you are listeners to them." [At-Tawbah: 47] And that is because he was created with a nature that is not receptive to good. And He alone knows who is guided, both outwardly and inwardly.
