And when they, after the coming of guidance, have persisted in their desires, and this surah was among the first to be revealed, and the believers were few, it caused the saying: "So turn away from one who turns away". This means he has burdened himself contrary to what reason and innate nature call for. Whoever turns away "from Our remembrance" means His mentioning of us. So he turned away from the remembrance that We revealed, and he did not attain it nor reflect upon its meanings. Therefore, he should not pay attention to anything he has learned, for indeed, it is sealed upon his heart. Even if his intellect is sharper than poetry, it will lead to nothing but evil. "So let not your soul go off in regret for them" [Fatir: 8]. For upon you is only the conveying of the message.
And when the one who turns away may accept at another time, it is indicated by his continuous state in a profound manner by His saying: "And he did not will". This means at a time among the times "except the worldly life", meaning the present, so he aims for it with tangible things like animals, being blind to its baseness and insignificance. Then he translated the two phrases of turning away and wanting with His saying:
