(p-62). And when the questioning is of a denial nature, the meaning is: he does not have what he wished for. This was a definitive proof that he is a subdued one, overpowered by the One who has all authority. This caused him to say: ﴿So for Allah﴾, meaning the Sovereign, the Most Great, alone. And since the other [life] is the abode of pleasures and the attainment of all wishes and their deprivation, and they claim therein according to the estimation of it being all that they wish for from the intercession of their deities and their response to their happiness and such, he preceded his saying: ﴿the Hereafter﴾. He does not grant wishes therein except to whoever follows His guidance and opposes his desires. As for ﴿the first﴾, he does not grant all wishes therein to anyone at all, as is observed. So whoever leaves his desires therein will attain his wishes in the Hereafter, and whoever follows his desires will not reach his goal in this world and will be deprived of his wishes in the Hereafter. For this reason, he preceded it, not for a separation, for if it were said 'the other', it would have sufficed for a separation.
