Commentary
(p-40) Surah An-Najm
Its purpose is to condemn desires for producing misguidance and blindness by being attached to the world, which is the abode of troubles and trials, transience and annihilation. It praises knowledge for its fruitfulness in guiding towards the Hereafter, for it is the abode of permanence in happiness or misery. It urges following the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) in his warning, which was clarified by Surah Qaf and confirmed by Adh-Dhariyat, and established and specified by At-Tur. This is as it is followed in his glad tidings, for his knowledge is the true knowledge, as he does not speak from desire, neither in explicit expression nor in its clarification, for all is from Allah, glorified and exalted is He, who possesses the attributes of perfection. Therefore, there must be a resurrection of creation to Him and their gathering before Him, so that His wisdom may manifest to the utmost degree. He raises the people of purification and manifestation, and lowers the people of wickedness, and exposes every one adorned with falsehood, manifesting evil. This is indicated by its name, An-Najm, reflecting on the oath and the answer, and what is organized therein from the stars of the Book (In the name of Allah), which encompasses the attributes of perfection. Thus, His Messenger can only be from the one of perfection (the Most Gracious), who encompasses all existents with the attribute of beauty (the Most Merciful), who has specifically chosen the people of His love for salvation from misguidance and guidance to what pleases Him from good character and righteous deeds.
* *And when At-Tur concluded with His command (blessings and peace be upon him) with glorification and praise, and His command was creation, not obligation, He was certainly an actor. This was after they divided their words about the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him), claiming that he was a soothsayer, a magician, and insane. Therefore, there was a connection to the devils, and the devils were opposed to the Qur'an with their deception and by preventing it with stones from the stars, as clarified by the last of the poets. This was opened with the encouragement to be guided by his guidance, and to seek evidence from his signs, and to follow his traces. And since this included His glorification with praise at the setting of the stars, He swore at the beginning of this by the star in a manner broader than what is in the end of that. Thus, He expressed with a statement that conveys its ascent and elevation, for there is no one from the moving stars that disappears in the western horizon except that it rises from the eastern horizon in a counterpart to it, for what is at that time from that lofty expression and pure remembrance, along with what is in it of the wondrous creation indicating the oneness of its Creator from the adornment of the sky, which contains what you are promised, and the guarding from the rebellious ones, preserving the stars of the Book and being guided by it in religion and the world, and other wisdoms known by the wise. So He, the Exalted, said: "By the star," meaning this type of stars of the sky or the Qur'an for its descent in segments. They call the division 'tanjim' - or the plants. Al-Baghawi said: The star is called a star for its rising, and every rising is a star.
﴿When it falls﴾ means it descends for the setting or for the stoning of the devils during the stealing of hearing, as narrated by Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both. If the intended meaning is celestial, then worship, seeking forgiveness, and supplication to the Sovereign, the Compeller, at dawn are present with it. Or if it ascends, then it is for the guidance of the one praying, the reader, and the traveler. It is said: 'He fell' - with a fathah (a) if he drops, and with a dammah (u) if he rises and ascends. Or it may be that the angel brought him up for elevation and distance if the intended meaning is the Qur'an, for what occurs from blessings in religion and this world, and the expansion of the chests, and the insight into the wonders of destiny. Or if it falls, spread out on the ground, or rises above it if the intended meaning is vegetation, for what is in it of strange craftsmanship and magnificent estimation that indicates the universality of power, the perfection of knowledge, and the oneness in sovereignty and absolute wealth.
