Commentary
And when the decree is a calming of the heart of one who intends to respond to them regarding the proposed verses, hoping for their faith: We have certainly recited to them in this surah and in other verses, and we have presented to them the clear miracles. We have shown them the contradictions in these divisions, with that which shakes the towering mountains. We have clarified their scandals with the beauty of its presentation and the sweetness of its taste, and the correctness of its meanings and the precision of its structures, that which shakes the steadfast, breaks the resolves, relieves the crises, and deters those of nobility from such disgraceful deficiencies, due to the clear evidence it possesses. However, when we compelled them with the opposite, they do not believe. We have blinded them with what has made them unaware, so they do not know that they are the ones being deceived. He then turned to his saying: "And if they see" meaning in sight "a piece". It was said: pieces, one of them is a kisf, like sidrah and sidr. "From the sky" during the day openly, "falling, they would say" stubbornly and defiantly in their oppression, persisting, and their attachment to whatever they can from the doubts, deceiving the minds and stopping those of opinions and understandings, the habit of the original in supporting falsehood and resisting the truth due to their deep-rootedness in the blindness of hearts, while we have the ability to divert them from the faces of the matter: This is "cloud". If it is said to them: It is contrary to the cloud due to its hardness, they would say: "Stacked" meaning some of it has piled upon others and has solidified. And for this reason, it has caused this state that indicates that they have reached in the blindness of insight to the point that if every sign were to come to them, they would not believe. His saying to his Prophet and those who follow him:
