Commentary
Or do they say what is more disgraceful than contradiction: "He fabricated it"? That is, he made up his saying from himself, falsely, and it is neither poetry nor prophecy nor madness. And despite their multitude and some of them being knowledgeable and others being experienced in poetry, speeches, writing, and rhymed prose, they are unable to produce anything like it, nor even anything similar to it. And since speech is a reality in the soul, and they know the falseness of all that they say regarding that, the implication is: they did not truly and sincerely say anything of that. Rather, they do not believe, meaning they do not acknowledge the truth while knowing the falseness of their words and their contradictions, out of stubbornness from them, not out of genuine denial in their hearts.
