Commentary
And when it was as if it was said to them: Indeed, they will say that, he said, informing them of their response: "Say, wait." And he did not address their argument in their saying this, as a warning that it is of a status that does not require a response by debate. Then he caused them to wait by his saying: "For indeed, I am with you." And he emphasized it as a warning that he hopes for joy in their misfortune just as they hope for joy in their misfortune, even if their multitude and strength with them is a barrier against such waiting. "Of the waiters" means those who are experienced in waiting, even if you think otherwise. And he indicated by the companionship that he is equal to them in that, even if they think due to their multitude and strength and unity that the matter is otherwise. Al-Qushayri said: It has come in the tafsir that all of them - meaning those who waited for him - died. He said: And it is not appropriate for anyone to hope for the hypocrisy of his market by the death of someone so that the turn ends with him, for few are those who have this trait except that death overtakes them, and they do not attain what they wished for from their desires.
