Commentary
And when they mentioned their fear, they clarified it, also confirming it by saying: "Indeed, we were" meaning by what we were created upon and prepared for. And when supplication is in the meaning of the act of worship, and it occurs at certain times, the conjunction indicates this while omitting it before this in the supplication with strength, indicating that adorning oneself with virtues is accepted from him with ease, and the removal of vices must include a complete detachment from every little and much. It was said: "Before" meaning in this world, "we call upon Him" meaning we ask Him and worship Him by action. As for our fear with strength, it was in every movement and stillness. Then they justified their supplication to Him, confirming that His grace upon them, despite their shortcomings, is something that hardly anyone else would do. So it is something that is greatly astonishing, and they said: "Indeed, He is" meaning alone, "the Most Gracious" the vast giver, whose giving is wisdom and whose withholding is mercy. For He is not diminished by giving nor increased by withholding. He grants His believing servant what corresponds to his soul, for perhaps He grants him with blessings and perhaps He grants him with hardship. He chooses for him from the conditions what is better for him to expand for him in the Hereafter. Therefore, the believer should not suspect his Lord in anything of His decree, "the Most Merciful" who honors whom He wills of His servants by establishing them in what He is pleased with from His obedience, then by His favor upon him even if he falls short in his service.
