Commentary

And when this great, abiding bliss calls for companionship, by the fragrant companion, it clarifies that this is their necessary, evident state, of the pure, fitting attributes. So He said: ﴿They dispute﴾ meaning they drink, engaging in playful interaction due to excessive love and joy, and the adornment of companionship. ﴿In it is a cup﴾ meaning wine, the delicacy of its rim is such that it is almost invisible in its cup. And since there are pitfalls in the wine of this world, He negated them from it, saying: ﴿No idle talk﴾ meaning no uselessness that harms or benefits. ﴿In it﴾ meaning in their dispute or because of it, for it does not take away their minds, nor do they speak except with good and beautiful words. ﴿And no sin﴾ meaning there is nothing in it that would bring sin upon its drinkers, nor is its attribution permissible.
